Highway in spotlight

The rough condition of the Southern Ports Highway between Millicent and Beachport will be the subject of an open forum on September 2.

Starting at 6.30pm at the Beachport Bowling Club, it will be hosted by two Liberal politicians.

Local MLC Ben Hood, who is the State Shadow Assistant Minister for Regional South Australia and Federal Shadow Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and Member for Barker Tony Pasin have organised the meeting.

“The state of regional roads is simply unacceptable,” Mr Hood said.

“The community forum will hear from business owners, regional leaders and community members and to discuss what can be done about the dangerous and unacceptable state of the Southern Ports Highway.”

Invitations have been extended to Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Tom Koutsantonis and representatives of the Department of Transport, Mayor Des Noll and Wattle Range Councillors, local members of parliament Nick McBride and Clare Scriven MLC and a number of shadow ministers.

Much of the Southern Ports Highway was built on the former narrow gauge railway corridor which ran between Mount Gambier to Beachport from 1879 until 1956. The road is the responsibility of the State Government.
