Visitor facilities at the historic Glencoe Woolshed have received a $36,000 upgrade through the State Government’s Thriving Communities Program.
The upgraded toilet facilities, which include the provision of disabled toilets, are now complete and the Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development Clare Scriven visited the historical site for an update on the work.
The project, driven by the Glencoe Woolshed National Trust Branch, replaces the previous facilities built in the 1970s and brings them in line with the latest health and safety standards. In addition to improving disabled access, the new facilities also include a baby changing table and a storage area.
With visitor facilities at the Glencoe Woolshed often also accessed by passers-by and the general community, the new facilities boost broader tourism infrastructure in the region.
The project is one of nine Thriving Communities Program projects in the Limestone Coast region that are either under way or completed.
Glencoe Woolshed National Trust Branch chairperson Stephen Maxwell was delighted with the upgrades.
“The woolshed is a much loved, much used and iconic local attraction and this upgrade of visitor amenities at the site enables us to ensure a much-improved visitor experience,” he said.
“The Glencoe Woolshed environs, including our picnic areas, are not only enjoyed by visitors to the woolshed but also by many locals, so in upgrading the toilet facilities to the latest standards, and including the provision of a disabled toilet, this assists in strengthening tourist infrastructure in the region.
“With no public toilets sited in Glencoe the woolshed facilities will now continue to meet a need long into the future.”
Minister Scriven said it was fantastic the upgraded facilities
at the Glencoe Woolshed were now complete.
“Thousands of people visit this historically significant site on the Limestone Coast each year and we have delivered a better and more accessible experience for them,” she said.
“The aim of the Thriving Communities Program is broad community benefit, and this project delivers that.”
Member for MacKillop Nick McBride also welcomed the upgraded amenities.
“I am so pleased to see the historic Glencoe Woolshed received funding to upgrade their toilet facilities through the Thriving Communities Program,” he said.
“This woolshed is of huge historical significance to Glencoe and the surrounding region and attracts hundreds of visitors every year. We need to make these attractions as inclusive as possible – and I know from my visits to the woolshed, the current facilities are old and substandard.
“This funding will not only assist the Glencoe woolshed – but the township itself, which does not have any public facilities.
“New facilities will help encourage tourism to the Limestone Coast, while at the same time supporting the cultural heritage of the area.”
The Thriving Communities Program of the Thriving Regions Fund provides small grants ranging from $20,000 to $50,000 to local associations for projects that build social resilience through facilitating community participation.
