Naracoorte’s 3rd Light Horse Regiment will add an extra touch as special guests of the Robe 2 Recovery Anzac event. The Anzac weekend will showcase the importance of the veteran respite program run by Robe 2 Recovery, which owes its success to the generous local people and businesses within the community.
The 3rd Light Horse Regiment will feature at the Mid-South East family league match of the round, when Robe plays Hatherleigh in specially designed uniforms to vie for the Anzac best on ground medals. Robe 2 Recovery event co-ordinator Lonny Peel said it was an honour to host the horses as part of the ceremonies.
“On the completion of WWI, Light Horse Troop Regiments continued throughout Australia,” she said. “In 1938 there was a large training camp at the Naracoorte Racecourse approximately 800 men with their horses. “At the start of WWII, the Light Horse was involved in reconnaissance work in Australia and available for deployment overseas. “But with the war becoming quickly mechanised the horses were retired and the men repositioned into various other units of the army.
“Naracoorte re-formed the 3rd Light Horse Regiment – Naracoorte Troop in May 2014.” The troop’s members are mostly local people who have an interest in horses and in particular military history.
