Inter seek perfect path to glory

The International Football Club has the chance to complete a dream run to the 2020 Limestone Coast Football Association title in this Sunday’s decider against Gambier Centrals.

Chasing a fourth successive title and a 15th in 16 years, Inter has been unstoppable.

The black and blue has not lost a game and have appeared a class above its opposition.

International coach Tony D’Agostino is proud of his team’s effort so far, but understands the job is far from done.

“We are delighted to have this commitment from our players and the results speak for themselves, so hopefully we can do it in one more game,” he said.

Leading from the front has been Inter’s strike weapon Matthew Bueti.

He easily won the competition’s goal-scoring award with 26 and received strong support from youngster Noah Koko Htoo, while goal- keeper Brayden May has been unbreakable.

However, D’Agostino said he could not pin- point a particular individual and instead the strongest part of the squad was its team-first mentality with performers all over the pitch.

“It is always about the team for us,” he said. “If I pick out a player they would say they could not have done it without their team mates.

“Impressively we managed to play three young kids in our defensive five and conceded only three goals, but we have scored over 70.

“The club performs well because each player plays to the best of their ability.”

However, the only club to take the fight to the black and blue has been their grand final opponents Centrals.

“Centrals are a very good team and have pushed us in almost every game we have played this year,” D’Agostino said.

“In two of the three games we have won by the minimal margin of one goal.

“They have a very good structure and could give us a big challenge.”

But Centrals’ best efforts have not been enough to stop the Inter juggernaut and the latter’s imperious campaign makes it easy to forget how difficult the 2020 season has been with an interrupted lead up due to COVID-19.

D’Agostino said the year’s challenges would make the end prize even more memorable if everything goes Inter’s way.

“Any premiership is special, but I think this one will go down in history as the one people will talk about because of all of the challenges that were thrown at us,” he said.

“The reality is it has been a difficult season for everybody, so it is going to be a special premiership that will be remembered.”

This mentality spells danger for Centrals, but D’Agostino also knows the possibilities are endless in a grand final and is anxious ahead of the big day.

“I am always nervous because a grand final is a grand final,” he said.

“You have to respect the opposition and understand the ball is round and any- thing can happen.

“All the players know it is over after the final whistle, so they will put everything in they can.”
