It’s raining records and medals for Casterton Little Athletics Centre

CASTERTON Little Athletics is celebrating a huge weekend, with two club records on Friday night and a swag of big results – including 10 medals – from the weekend’s regional championships at Warrnambool.

Our two senior athletes, Marianna Novikov and Myles Black, are the only participants in their respective age groups and like others in that position, we appreciate how difficult it can be to continue to push yourself every week to reproduce and exceed results when there’s nobody to compete with or measure yourself against.

Despite the challenges, each works hard every week and in addition to cutting up to five seconds off their personal bests in track events in recent weeks, set a new club record in the field on Friday night.

Competing in the Under 16 Girls division, Marianna slashed an incredible 10 centimetres off her age group’s club high jump record set in 2020 by Zoe Hill, jumping 1.5 metres.

She then went on to take the gold medal in the same event at the Warrnambool regionals on Sunday, as well as the silver medal in the 16-year-old Girls 800-metre track event.

Myles, who lines-up in the Under 17 Boys division, had previously set the club’s javelin record for the age group at 20.35 metres and replicated the effort on Friday night.

Just two days later, he exceeded that effort to claim the silver medal in the same event at regionals with a whopping 20.5m throw, as well as silver in the discus, gold in the high jump and bronze in the 100m sprint.

In the younger ranks, Lori Campbell continues to push the limits each week and is a great ambassador for our club.

She headed to Warrnambool for regionals at the weekend where, in a big, highly competitive 9-year-old Girls field, she posted a PB in the 70-metre sprint and placed 6th in the discus and 8th in the high jump.

Curtis Campbell is another athlete who has been competing solo in his Under 11 age group and over recent weeks his focus on PBs – particularly in long-distance track events – has paid dividends.

But it was the field where he excelled at the weekend, taking the bronze medal place on the podium in the discus at the Warrnambool regionals.

After a gruelling Friday night program, Annabell Allkin and Jack Novikov, competing in the Under 13 Girls and Boys age groups, respectively, lined up for big programs at the regionals.

Annabel put in a massive effort to compete in three events, finishing just outside the medals in the 100m and 200m track events, before taking the bronze medal in the 80m hurdles.

The hurdles is something our athletes have not had a huge amount of experience in, so to medal in this event is an outstanding effort.

Pocket-rocket Jack always seems to have a little extra fuel in the tank and this was evident on Sunday, when he lined up in four big events at Warrnambool.

Taking 5th place in the 200m and 6th in the 100m, Jack then took his place on the podium, claiming silver in the high jump and bronze in the long jump.

Congratulations and thank you to all of our athletes who do our club proud at these events, as well as the mums, dads, carers and friends who do the driving and turn up to support them – greatly appreciated!
