Junior cricket gets under way with sunny afternoon matches

Under 12 Mount Burr v Gambier Centrals

The first round of the Under 12 cricket season got under way on a beautiful sunny afternoon with hosts Mount Burr playing Gambier Centrals.

The Burr went in to bat first innings and were in a bit of trouble when Lock dispatched two of the top three batters in quick succession.

Patrick Freebairn (22 not out) and Kobe Bromley (14 not out) then formed a great partnership to steady the innings, with Freebairn chalking up five boundaries.

Centrals’ Flier (2/8) bowled well and picked up two handy wickets. The remaining Burr batters were steady, after 20 overs the score was 4/96.

Centrals opener Lock (14) looked in good touch with the bat but eventually succumbed to the pace of Harley Chapple (2/2).

Spin proved tricky and incumbent Burr player Preston Lydeamore (2/7) ripped some leg breaks to pick up two important wickets.

Gardiner valued his wicket and helped Centrals bat out their allotted 20 overs, with a final innings score of 6/51 giving the Burr a 45 run victory.

Under 14 Millicent v Mount Burr

On a perfect day for cricket Teej Lawlor (Millicent) won the toss and elected to bat.

He opened the innings with Isaac Chambers and got off to a flying start with runs accumulating quickly in the early overs.

Both boys retired not out after the 6th over with the score on a healthy 57 runs (T. Lawlor 18no, I. Chambers 14no).

This brought Max Hunt and Ryder Lindner to the crease who kept up the strong run rate with a partnership of 53 (Lindner 31 not out, Hunt 13 not out) with Lindner dominating the partnership with six classy boundaries.

Both boys were retired at the 11th over which saw Klaye Kenny and vice-captain Ned Fitzgerald stride to the crease for their turn in the middle.

A good piece of bowling by Lydemore and a great catch by Naga Wright sent Kenny on his way without scoring, giving the Mount Burr team something to cheer about.

Lenny Tunkin and Fitzgerald had a great little partnership, both scoring 7 not out before retiring, bringing Cruz Gibson and Curtis Shanks to the crease.

Both boys endured some tight bowling and good fielding to make scoring a challenge and dry the runs up before retiring not out.

This brought Oakley Nicholls and Paddy Fitzgerald to the crease with success to the Mount Burr team with a great ball by Zephyr Wright knocking over Nicholls’ stumps.

With Gibson returning he set to try and up the run rate scoring at a run a ball late in the innings, before Mason Taylor also got one through the defences to knock the stumps over.

Millicent ended up scoring a very handy total of 152 off their allotted 20 overs.

Mount Burr started their innings well seeing off the opening bowlers with some tight defence before Ned Fitzgerald was rewarded for some very tight bowling, knocking over Naga Wright’s stumps.

He then sent Brant back exactly the same way in his next over to have Mount Burr in a bit of trouble at 2 for 14.

With Coaden Taylor coming and going quickly due to a nice ball from Lenny Tunkin  rattling his stumps as well, Mount Burr were struggling at 3 for 14.

This did not deter opener Harry Baker who stayed in until his retirement from 20 balls faced playing some nice drives during his innings.

This had Lydemore and McGrath join each other in the middle and they were starting to build a nice partnership until a great piece of fielding by Lindner ran out McGrath, with Lydemore suffering the same fate with great fielding by Fitzgerald.

Klaye Kenny then got in on the act gaining two quick wickets, one bowled and one to a great catch by Gibson at mid-off.

The lower order did a great job by batting out the overs with Baker top scoring with 11 and Lydermore with 8.

Millicent bowled tight lines and demonstrated good fielding to finish the game on top with Mount Burr managing 8 for 52.

Under 17 East Gambier v Mil Lel

The first game of Mount Gambier and District cricket season for 2022/23 was in the under 17 competition and Mil Lel took on East Gambier in a 20/20 one day game at Frew Park on Friday afternoon.

After a delayed start because of rain, East won the toss and took advantage of batting first in damp conditions and took that to full advantage with opening batters Angus Clark 19 not out and Luke Richards 16 not out both retiring.

Some middle order big hitting from Ned Skeer 25 not out and Riley Clarke 29, East Gambier recorded a strong score of 4 for 147 off their 20 overs.

The best with the ball for Mil Lel was Brodie Pftizner with 1 for 9 and Archer Virtanen 1 for 15.

In reply Mil Lel got off to a fast start before losing their first wicket of Jack Leishman for 11.

Other top scores were Archer Virtanen 27 not out and Noah Virtanen 16 not out and the best with the ball for East was Jack Lawrence who took two wickets.

In the end Mil Lel made 6 for 86 off only 14.1 overs before it became too dangerous to play due to fading light.

The decision was made to stop play for safety reasons, resulting in the game being abandoned and finishing in a draw.
