Junior Eagles and Tigers face off for football glory

The Eagle has landed as the best team all year and was crowned Limestone Coast Women’s Football League premiers at Kybybolite oval on Friday night.

Hatherleigh went into the final game of the season heavy favourite having had a dominant season, however if any team in the competition could challenge the side enough to cause a potential upset it was the North Tigers.

The Tigers had managed to keep the Eagles to their lowest score of the season the previous week and was the only team in the competition to score against them.

However Hatherleigh got away to a good start in the first quarter as it put three goals through the big sticks.

The Tigers were resilient though and managed to score one goal of their own to only be down 13 points at quarter time.

The second quarter belonged to the underdogs as they reduced the difference even further.

The Tigers defence was also on top in the second term keeping Hatherleigh goalless, and the Tigers managed to close the gap to just six points at the main break.

The Eagles came out fighting in the third quarter as the side proved the importance of the premiership quarter.

The Tigers defence struggled under the constant pressure as the Eagles kicked three goals and held the opposition scoreless to extend the lead to a match high 25 points.

The game was all but over going into the final quarter thanks to Hatherleigh efforts in the third term, but the Tigers were determined to go down fighting.

Both sides hit the scoreboard in the final quarter but North Gambier was unable to make enough of an impact with only one goal for the quarter as the final siren went declaring Hatherleigh premiers.

The final score saw Hatherleigh 7.4 (46) defeat the Tigers 3.3 (21).

Hatherleigh captain Sebella Coghlan was named best on ground for her match winning performance.

The best players in a losing Tigers team were Grace Altschwager, Lila Pearson, Eadie Mustart, Raine Darimaani, Yenna Joyce and Maggie Collins.

Both Mackenzie Burke and Niah Faulkner managed to score two goals in the biggest match of the year for Hatherleigh, with Piper Paul, Chloe Bellinger and Hannah Bellinger also managing to kick one goal.

For the Tigers, Layla McPherson booted two goals and Claire Mitchell was able to kick one of her own.

With the season coming to an end Hatherleigh has been deservingly crowned the champions after 10 weeks of consistent performances.

The Tigers will no doubt be disappointed with the end result but the side fought well against tough opposition and finished second for the season.

Hatherleigh’s Amber Chester was the standout player in front of goal this season with 33 goals to her name, 16 more than second placed Layla McPherson from the Tigers.

Hatherleigh will now look to next season with hopes it can defend its title in the under 16s competition.
Kyby Tigers v Demons
The Kyby Tigers secured third place for the 2023 season after an impressive performance against the Demons.

After the home and away season Kyby Tigers sat in third place, with the Demons sitting one win below in fourth.

On Friday Kyby started the match off strong as it put the first goal on the board.

The Demons failed to capitalise on their only scoring shot for the quarter with just the one behind to their name at quarter time.

The Tigers took control of the match in the second quarter as they continued to extend their scoreboard pressure.

Kyby managed to hold a 13 point lead over the visitors at half time after keeping the Demons scoreless in the second quarter and goalless for the half.

The Demons defence was holding strong against good pressure from the Kyby forwards and midfield, restricting the side to just one goal for the third term.

However the visitors again struggled to make an impact on the scoreboard with the side only scoring a single point for the quarter.

The final quarter proved a real tussle between the two sides as the Demons tried desperately to claw back into the match in the final moments, however they were unsuccessful as the Tigers defence proved too strong.

The Demons remained goalless for the match as the final siren went, sealing the deal and confirming Kyby’s third place finish.

The final score was Kyby 3.4 (22) to the Demons 0.2 (2) after an impressive performance from the home side.

The Tigers had plenty of contributors, with Chloe Copping, Jessica Cox, Chloe Stewart, Summer Batchelor, Chloe Crouch and Elise Hahn all recognised for their performances.

Copping, Batchelor and Hahn all kicked a goal apiece in the win.
