North Gambier v Casterton Sandford
North Gambier came away with a hard fought win over Casterton Sandford in the Limestone Coast Women’s Football League on Sunday at Vansittart Park.
The opening quarter was fairly low scoring as the Tigers only kicked one goal while the Cats struggled with two minor scores, giving the Tigers a four point lead at the first change.
In the second term the Cats responded well as they put a goal on the board while the Tigers only had one shot at goal which resulted in a minor score.
By half time the Casterton Sandford had taken a two point lead.
In the third term the Tigers were able to get things going as they put two more goals on the board while holding Casterton goalless.
Heading into the final term the Tigers had regained the lead as the Cats trailed by 10.
North kept their defensive intensity up in the final stanza as they held the Cats to only two points.
To bounce off they added to their lead to close out the game, scoring two goals.
North Gambier’s Tess Andrews was a top performer, being named best for her side.
North Gambier defeated Casterton Sandford 5.2 (52) to 1.6 (12).
Penola v Millicent
Penola picked up another important win on Sunday, with a late comeback against Millicent at McDonald Park.
Both sides struggled in the first half, with limited goals being put on the board.
By half time both sides each had a solitary goal to their name with the Saints holding a slim two point lead.
In the third term both sides continued to struggle finding the big sticks as Millicent had many chances at putting the game away but struggled, kicking three points.
Penola continued to battle but could not add any goals to their tally in the third frame.
In the final term the Eagles found a new level as they took over the game, kicking six goals which helped them get over the line as Millicent failed to score in the quarter.
Penola captain Caroline McGrath was named the best with two goals while Angela Broad helped her side get over the line with four goals.
Penola defeated Millicent 7.3 (45) to 1.5 (11).
Mundulla v Kongorong
Mundulla picked up an important win on Sunday over Kongorong at Vansittart Park.
The Tigers started slow in the opening term as they left a lot of points on the table, kicking one goal and five points.
Kongorong also struggled to start the match, going scoreless in the quarter.
The Tigers began to pull away from the Hawks in the second period as they put four goals on the board, however there was still room for improvement as they again kicked five points in a quarter.
At half time Mundulla held a 40 point lead.
The Tigers continued to add to their lead with a three goal third quarter.
The Hawks were able to get some success up forward as they finally hit the scoreboard with a goal but were still facing a large deficit as they trailed by 52 points.
In the final term Mundulla finished strong as they held Kongorong scoreless while kicking five goals to help seal the victory.
Mundulla defeated Kongorong 13.15 (93) to 1.1 (7).
Kybybolite v South Gambier
Kybybolite pushed their winning streak to seven in a row as they defeated South Gambier at McDonald Park on Sunday.
The Tigers got off to a solid start to begin the match, kicking four goals while the Dees stayed in striking distance with a goal of their own.
After the opening quarter the Tigers held an 18 point lead.
In the second term Mundulla began to pull away from South as they piled on four goals while holding the Dees scoreless.
At the half time break Mundulla was in front with a comfortable 43 point lead.
The Dees did a much better job of slowing down the Tigers in the third quarter, holding them to seven points in the term.
Despite the solid defensive effort the Dees struggled to put anything on the board as they ended the quarter trailing by 50 points.
In the final frame the Tigers put the game to bed as they kicked three goals while holding South scoreless for a third consecutive quarter.
Kybybolite’s Dellie Brown was named as her side’s best while Sarah Ottoson-Crossling kicked four goals.
Kybybolite defeated South Gambier 12.4 (76) to 1.1 (7).
Under 16s
In the under 16 competition first place and undefeated Hatherleigh had a massive win over East Gambier at McDonald Park, beating the Doggies by 170 points.
At Vansittart Park North Gambier hosted Kongorong with the Tigers getting the win, defeating the Hawks by 51.
The final game at McDonald Park was Kybybolite up against South Gambier with the Tigers getting the win, downing the Dees by 23 points.
