Fifty-three ladies participated in the Mount Gambier Golf Club’s open day last week, sponsored by Bryson Wines.
The competition was played in great weather and the course was presented very well, thanks to Jake and volunteers.
A stroke round was conducted for 10 lady golfers with handicaps ranging from 0-18 as they played for the prestigious SE Open Championship.
The champion golfer in first place was Millicent Golf Club’s Kirsty Bailey, finishing in front of Jennifer Van Ritjhoven (Mount Gambier Golf Club), after winning on a play-off on the first par 5 hole.
Both ladies had 85 off the stick and Bailey won the day with a par on the first hole with Van Ritjhoven recording a six.
Faye Mainwaring (handicap 14) took out first position in the best nett competition, finishing with 74, including six pars in the round.
Carol Davis (18) finished second on a countback with scores of 82-18-74 nett.
The B Grade championship was played out in a stableford event which was won by Jess Parsons (24) with a fine score of 16/21=37 points, including six three pointers.
Another countback was necessary for Carol Smith (23) to take out second position with her score of 18/19 =37 points.
The C Grade championship went to long standing member Maxine McGregor (30), who recorded 21 points on the back nine and 16 on the front for a total of 37.
Second place went to Mary Kentish (30) with a consistent split of 18/17=35 points.
The D Grade champion was Blue Lake Golf Club’s Lesley McPherson (37) with equal front and back nines of 17 for a total of 34.
Jane Lamont (39) scored 14/16=30 points to finish second.
The pro shot went to Van Ritjhoven, while nearest the pins went to Bernie Jennings, Smith, Libby Altschwager and Jo Gogan.
The teams event went to the trio of Davis, Kerry Pedlar and Van Ritjhoven, while Maxine McGregor won the veterans section.
The club last week hosted a three-person gentsome event, sponsored by Janina Morrison and Carol Smith.
This is a seldom played competition but was thoroughly enjoyed by all teams.
The day started off with rain which did abate, and the weather was pleasant for the rest of the event.
With a fine score of 84 points, Mardi Goodes, Jeannette Braun and Jennifer Van Ritjhoven took out first place with a great back nine, their split was 39/45 -84 points.
Second place went to the trio of Gail Watson, Lizzie Clements and Helen Gregory who played the front nine exceptionally well, pencilling in 44 points combined with the back nine 39 points for a total of 83.
The ball run down went to Helen McIntrye, Bernie Jennings and Heather Chapman, and the three players of Bev Pedlar, Janina Morrison and Carol Smith.
The pro shot went to Morrison and the encouragement award to Lois Harvey, Di Norman and Faye Mainwaring.
On Saturday 15 ladies contested a stableford event in fine weather with Jan Shanahan (18) notching up a great score of 40 points, made up of a split of 19/21 points = 87 gross score.
Shanahan registered a birdie on the eighth hole for four points and four pars in her round.
Shanahan rounded out a solid day by claiming the pro shot and nearest the pin.
Penne Saffin (21) played to her handicap and had 19/17=36 points with a birdie on the ninth hole plus five pars.
Four balls were handed out in the run down and went to Bernie Jennings (33 points) to Sharran Waters (32 points).
