League’s best put on show in Adelaide

The Limestone Coast Football Association (LCFA) has ended its run at the SAJSA Junior State Championships, with teams of juniors making their way to Adelaide for the weekend.

Alongside the juniors were a team of men, representing the association in a match against Riverland, with the team dominant in a 5-1 win.

Forward Matt Bueti scored three goals for the LCFA alongside a long-distance cracker from Broc Linden, described as the goal of the day by coach Tony D’Agostino and a goal from Kaleb Gentile.

LCFA midfielders Tobbei Kennett and Austin Rossi created plenty of chances for the team from the centre of the park, with substitutes Tyler Michielan, Connor Prior and Brayden Coppick making their entry later in the game.

The match was backed up by a good performance from keeper Jimmy Kipping and the attack-thwarting efforts of Ricky McRobert and Matt Grgetic.

D’Agostino said the result highlighted the Limestone Coast league as one of the state’s strongest and most talented, adding that he was impressed with the young talent on show.

The LCFA senior squad was  made up of seven players 19-years- old or younger, while 10 of the  players represented the LCFA senior team for the first time.

Moving down in the ages, the  Under 16 girls welcomed a second- place finish with a run of wins and  just one loss for the tournament.

This included a 2-0 win against Riverland and a 2-1 victory over Port Pirie on the first day.

The following day saw the team hit with a loss to Adelaide Hills 0-4, but a quick rebound against Broken Hill, with the LCFA winning that match 10-0.

The final day of the tournament ended positively for the Under 16 girls, who welcomed a 1-0 win against Port Lincoln.

Meanwhile, the Under 15 boys finished at the top of their group on 16 points in an undefeated run of matches over the tournament’s three days.

This was capped by a 5-0 win over Riverland followed by a victory over Adelaide Hills 4-0.

Following matches included a 1-1 draw against Port Pirie and another win over Adelaide Hills 3-1.

The Under 14B team responded with character in their run of matches, after recording a 1-7 defeat to Port Pirie, before turning it around with a run that led them to a grand final rematch with Port Pirie.

These included a 7-1 win over Whyalla, a 3-1 win over Adelaide Hills that was highlighted by a fantastic penalty save from Kade Turnbull and a semi-final victory over Broken Hill, 6-5.

However, Port Pirie came away  with the grand final win, beating LCFA 0-7.

The Under 13 girls were unlucky not to record a win at the state championships, with several scores close in competitive matches across the tournament’s three days.

Emmy Jeffries was the sole goal scorer for the team at the tournament in a 1-2 defeat by Riverland, with the team unable to score in a goalless draw against the  Adelaide Hills.

The team was also unable to convert its chances on the final day of the tournament against Port Lincoln, in a match that ended 0-1 in the latter’s favour.

The following scores were 7-0 over Adelaide Hills, 8-0 over Riverland and a 6-1 win over Port Pirie.

The grand final saw LCFA beat Adelaide Hills 1-0.

According to coach Vlada Gajic, adding to the team’s success at the tournament was the fact several players representing the team in 2021 were playing their first matches in a regional competition.

The Under 12 boys finished second at the tournament after a solid run over its three days.

In the first game against Riverland the team ended with a win 3-1, backed up by a high scoring fixture against Port Pirie, which ended 8-1.
