Learning centre students reveal
 hand-made textile creations

Students at Mount Gambier’s Independent Learning Centre displayed their creative flair recently, taking part in the Recycled Runway competition featuring guests from the Mount Gambier Migrant Resource Centre, with all profits from the event donated to Mount Gambier support agency ac.care.

The competition featured handmade creations based on an African Safari theme with the learning centre textile students brainstorming ideas using the theme as inspiration.

After much discussion the students opted to create a variety of items for a child’s playroom, implementing and developing their critical and creative thinking to re-purpose the fabrics and second-hand clothing from the contents in the competition bag supplied.

The final designs and creations included African inspired soft toys, children’s games, decorative floor mat, flag bunting, cushions, bedding, dream catcher, fabric baskets, dress up attire and a warriors shield, club and necklaces for imaginative play, a reading pillow-bag for storybooks and a framed fabric collage.

Students thanked volunteers Deb Thompson and Jade Poulton for their creativity and support in the textiles learning experience.
