Let us rejoice for award recipients

Dedicated Millicent community volunteer Bruce Clayson is the annual Australia Day Citizen of the Year for the Corcoran Ward on Wattle Range Council.

In the eyes of the general public, Mr Clayson is perhaps best known for his voluntary service with Saint John Ambulance and with the Millicent RSL.

After a lengthy period as president, Mr Clayson is currently the vice-president of the Millicent RSL.

Before his retirement from the paid workforce in 2014, he had devoted around two decades to local government service including the position of mechanic at the Millicent depot of Wattle Range Council.

Originally from Tantanoola, Mr Clayson spent many years running his own mechanical workshop and retail outlet on Williams Road.

This is now the base of No-Sweat Refrigeration His fellow Australia Day Citizens of the Year are Rhonda Burleigh (Kintore Ward), Sue Zwar (Riddoch Ward) and Mariska Hawke (Sorby Adams Ward).

The Young Citizens for 2021 are Frazer Johnston (Corcoran Ward), Josh Kellock (Kintore Ward) and Ebonie Moulton (Riddoch Ward).

The first-ever Active Citizen awards have gone to Narelle Marshall (Kintore Ward) and Greg Moore (Sorby Adams Ward).

The recipients of the 2021 Wattle Range Council Australia Day Awards were chosen by a council sub-committee and announced by Mayor Des Noll.

“The contribution and service these hardworking individuals have provided in our Wattle Range community has been acknowledged as recipients of these awards,” he said.

“As always, I am impressed with the calibre of this year’s nominations. “Each of the 2021 award winners has made a valuable contribution to the Wattle Range community and are worthy of such recognition.”

The awards will be officially presented at 9am at Australia Day breakfast functions which start at 8am on January 26 at the usual venues at Millicent, Beachport, Kalangadoo and Penola.

In Southend, an annual Australia Day afternoon will be held at the western beach from 2pm.

As part of the yearly rotation, the Mayor will be attending the Beachport function to present the Kintore awards.

The other awards will be presented by the respective ward councillors at their official breakfast function.

“I urge everyone in the Wattle Range Council region to come along and join in with the Australia Day celebrations on January 26,” Mayor Noll said.
