Life’s ebbs and flows explored

Penola’s Gallery 54 recently opened an exhibition called Ebb and Flow as part of the 2022 Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival.

The exhibition features artworks by talented Gallery 54 members Ann Carpenter, Joann Fife, Kaye Riley, Sally O’Connor, Diana Wiseman, Anne Miles, Clemmy Underdown and Denise Maddigan.

A variety of art styles are showcased throughout the gallery including drawings, paintings, mixed media, printmaking, textiles and plenty of pottery.

The exhibition was said to “challenge our life paths in the changes in landscape, people and life as it moves forward and steps back”.

Gallery 54 member Kaye Riley said Ebb and Flow was like movement with clay.

“Glaze runs are so unpredictable, a bit like our journey in life,” she said.

“There is always a surprise when unloading the kiln, just when you think all is going well, something unexpected happens.”

Gallery 54 member Diana Wiseman said tidelines were a metaphor for the ebb and flow of life.

“The ups and downs, the twists and turns, the coming and going, to feel the wind and to walk the tidelines is life itself,” she said.

There is still plenty of time to wander through the exhibition which is open until June 26, Thursday to Sunday from 10am until 3pm each week.
