Lights shine on mental health issues

Two Mount Gambier landmarks will be bathed in blue this week to recognise October being Mental Health Month.

The Mount Gambier and District Suicide Prevention Network has received approval from the Mount Gambier City Council to light up the Riddoch Arts and Cultural Centre and the Lady Nelson.

The illumination will start tonight to mark International Mental Health Day and will continue for five nights, raising awareness and starting conversations about mental health and wellbeing.

Blue has been chosen to signify mental health as it is described as peaceful and comfortable by nature, is the colour most preferred by men and considered a non-threatening colour.

Blue brings a calm and comfortable feeling to the mind, mostly described as peaceful, calm, safe, and orderly.

It is a symbol of stability and reliability.
