Limestone Coast locals rocked the night away at the St Martins Lutheran College gymnasium on Saturday for the ‘Rock N Roll Runway’ in the 12th installation of the Recyled Runway fundraiser.
Fashion enthusiasts creatively upcycled a bag of second-hand clothing from the Anglican Belltower Opportunity Shop into a new, wearable garment or themed outfit which was entered in one of the numerous categories.
Around 30 contestants from as far away as Adelaide, Lucindale and even interstate entered the competition which raised over $6000 for ac.care and more than $500 in raffle proceeds for the Nancy Wake Memorial Ride.
Recycled Runway contest manager Trudy-Anne Doyle said the improvements made this year were well received by the audience.
“We ran it a bit quicker and came out with a bit less talk and a bit more song, action and brought them out a bit quicker so the night finished earlier and a lot of the people in the audience said that was really good,” she said.
“One of this year’s initiatives was having a prize for the best dressed audience member and that really gave something for the night because people came a bit more dressed up.
“The unsung heroes of the night were Dot Saffin and Di Seidel in the kitchen who were assisted by members of the Lions Club of Blue Lake City Lioness.”
Grant High School took out the Battle of the Schools Trophy and in the school aged category, Alissa Stephenson won the wearable outfit and Chloe Noonan won the themed outfit.
In the novice section, the wearable outfit was awarded to Fransina Botha and Kate Noonan took out the themed outfit.
Miechel Lusty won the wearable outfit in the open category while Michelle Strada was awarded the themed outfit.
In the experienced category, it was Kathie Young who won the wearable outfit while Jenny Cox took out the themed outfit.
This year’s people’s choice winner was open contestant Nikki Clayfield who won by a mere three votes and Judy Bald won the first prize in the raffle.
The best dressed audience member was awarded to Merna who dressed as Rob Stewart and the inaugural best runway models were McKenzie who modelled for Amanda Ker, and Emmerine Botha who modelled for Fransina Botha and also filled in at the last minute for Monika Calliss.
