There were some special announcements heard by more than 100 diners who attended the 60th anniversary luncheon of the Millicent Lions Club at the Somerset Hotel in Millicent.
Zone chairman Margy Thomas received a $6000 donation to start training two Lions Assistance Dogs that are to be named Rexy and Leon.
Ben Miles on behalf of the late Lions member Leon Miles received the Posthumous Melvin Jones Fellowship award.
The guest speaker was top-rating Adelaide radio announcer and former Millicent resident Leith Forrest.
Among the other special guests were Tony Pasin MP, Wattle Range Mayor Des Noll and timber industry leader Eric Roughana.
The honour of cutting the anniversary cake went to long-time member Lou Spehr while the master of ceremonies was former Millicent Lions Club president Michael Bleby.
Former Millicent resident John Abbott from Brisbane travelled to his hometown for the occasion.
The 77-year-old joined Lions 54 years ago while working in New Guinea and has since joined clubs wherever he has lived.
“We would like to thank Millicent and the surrounding community for supporting us over the last 60 years and hope to spend another 60-plus years supporting this magnificent community,” a Lions spokesman said.
