Lions roar to home grand final

The Padthaway Lions have roared to a home grand final following another breathtaking week of Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara football.

The Lions had to contend with minor-premier and September specialist Mundulla in Saturday’s semi-final at Lucindale.

However, the reigning KNT premier had no answer for Padthaway’s ferociousness from the opening bounce.

The big forward 50 targets of Tobin Cox and Joshua Vandermeer were in fine from and kick started their assault with an accurate first term.

The Lions stamped their authority by slotting five of six set shots to open up a 17-point lead from a stuttering Mundulla side.

However, Padthaway sealed the decisive win after quarter time.

Across a dominant passage of play during the second and third quarters, the Northern Tigers could only find the big sticks once, while the Lions banged home six.

Suddenly Padthaway enjoyed a 43-point lead and the final quarter became a formality as the likes of Thomas Edwards, Jacob Eats and Matthew Raitt dominated around the ground.

Despite Jake Mcgrice inspiring Mundulla to a couple of late goals, the Lions still extended their lead to complete a satisfying 46-point win.

The result means Saturday, September 18 is a date for everyone at Padthaway to keep clear with the town having the chance of lifting the premiership cup on home turf.

The Northern Tigers’ season is not over however, as they receive a second life in this weekend’s preliminary final against Keith at Kingston.

Despite Mundulla easily accounting for the Crows back in round 9, the rematch will be a thriller with a grand final spot on the line.

Keith will carry loads of belief after it showed nerves of steel for a second successive week.

Just seven days after a last-gasp semi-final victory over Naracoorte, the Crows displayed their flying colours in crunch time to end Kingston’s fairytale season abruptly short.

The red, yellow and blue raced out of the blocks to enjoy a 16-point lead at the first break.

However, Keith should had possessed a larger lead after only converting 10 scoring shots and regretted it immediately as the Saints closed within a kick before the main break.

The second half was thoroughly entertaining for those in attendance around the Bordertown oval as the two premiership contenders went goal for goal to stay alive.

The Crows clawed onto the lead at each changeover thanks to the gutsy efforts of Will Schreiber, Jack Jones, George and Max Thring.

But James Siviour was unstoppable at the other end of the ground and threatened to rain on Keith’s parade.

Siviour’s bag of five pushed Kingston into the lead during the closing stages and as the final siren approached, the Crows were in grave danger of watching the game be robbed from under their beaks.

However, forward 50 target Ben Simounds came to the rescue and snuck a major through the big sticks seconds before the final siren to keep Keith’s dream alive.

Not every Kingston heart was broken on Sunday after the Reserves team finished Penola’s 2021 season.

After a tight opening three quarters, the Saints marched home by boosting a 15-point lead to a formidable 95-63 victory with a blitzing final term.

Robert Starling and Travis Burns were an unstoppable duo in front of goal kicking nine majors between them.

Tom Clayfield was a lone threat for the Eagles kicking six of his side’s nine goals.

The Saints will meet Bordertown in the preliminary final this weekend.

The Roosters could not overhaul Mundulla in a topsy-turvy contest for a grand final berth.

Bordertown only managed a solitary minor score in the first term as the Northern Tigers banged home four goals.

However, the Roosters turned the tables in a second term which followed the same pattern of the first.

After losing the lead, Mundulla hit back through Adam Obst and Harry Dowling to retake the advantage.

Bordertown had no answer in the final term and succumbed to a 22-point defeat.

Kybybolite is the first through to the Senior Colts decider after an impressive come-from-behind win over Naracoorte.

The Demons were at their daring best in the first quarter restricting Kyby to just two behinds.

However, Naracorote could only manage another four points across the second and third quarters as Kybybolite showed its hand through William Freckleton and Brodie Pratter.

By the time the last stanza started, Kyby enjoyed an unsalable lead and secured a 61-34 win.

The sudden-death semi-final between Keith and Mundulla was an instant classic.

The contest got off to a slow start with only one goal in the first term before the Northern Tigers brought the game to life with five majors in the second quarter.

Despite Mundulla not troubling the scores in the third term, the Crows could not put away their chances and gave up an 11-point lead at the final change of ends.

However, this did not deter the young Keith team as the likes of Tommy Llewellyn and Matthew Hutchings overhauled the Norther Tigers to win 40-33 in stunning fashion.

The Crows and Demons will collide to meet Kyby in the big dance.

The leading contender for the Junior Colts flag is Bordertown following its 27-point triumph over Naracoorte.

After a slow start, dominant second and fourth quarters pushed the Roosters over the line after strong performances from Ned Mccarthy and Cody Hutchinson.

The fight to the death between the Tigers was won by Mundulla.

The Northern Tigers flew from the start line and the dashing first term propelled the side to a 19-point win.

Tom Rogers was the biggest contributor for the victors, but Kyby never gave up thanks to Charlie Brodie’s solid effort.

Mundulla meets Naracoorte in this Sunday’s preliminary final.
