Lions sink teeth into Beachport playground upgrade

The Beachport Rivoli Bay Lions Club has contributed hundreds of volunteer hours towards the refurbishment of Beachport’s playground.

Club members, in collaboration with the Wattle Range Council, volunteered to give the playground a facelift.

The club’s publicity officer David Snook said council asked the club to assist with the new development.

“Our task was to remove and replace the old timber fence,” he said.

“A new gateway has been erected near the Waterfront Café giving better access to the playground and patrons of the café.

“The fence itself is made of timber frame and pickets, grey in colour that are made of a composite timber and recycled plastic, that will give a longer life span against the coastal environment.

“Working bees consisting of eight or nine members over four days, provided about 250 man hours of work.

“The project had an expenditure of approximately $7000.”

Mr Snook said a large pirate ship was the feature of the new playground, along with swings and other play equipment.

“One of the most popular items is the double zip line,” he said.

“Many squeals of delight can be heard as the zip line slams into the end of the line and then the children run back for more.

“Last summer the park on most days was brimming with parents and children.

“Other projects in the playground the Lions have been asked to do is refurbish the barbecue area and put new stainless steel tops on the barbecues themselves and render the walls of the shelter.

“Beachport is noted for its fantastic community effort and the Lions Club would like to thank Waterfront Café proprietor Joey Corman for providing free coffee to the crew on most days, and he even gave the crew a lunch of fish and chips.

“This effort was much appreciated by the Lions members.”
