Lobster price swell

Professional lobster fishers along the South East coast are currently benefitting from a soaring beach (wholesale) price of $87 per kilogram as well as an abundance of the fish and mostly favourable weather.

The 2021/22 season opened less than a fortnight ago with the initial return to the 160 boats being $70.

Industry sources say the majority of lobsters are being exported live to various markets in Asia.

Bad weather has been experienced on a few days which has kept the vessels anchored among the seven ports which comprise the Southern Zone.

The prices are welcome given they dropped well below $50 during last season after exports to mainland China were stopped.

The domestic market in Adelaide is currently charging retail customers $95 per kilogram and this is a $20 increase on the mid-September price.

A surge is expected in recreational lobster fishing along the South East coast over the coming long weekend but this will be weather dependent.
