Lobster prices hit new high

Lobsters fetched a record $123 per kilogram at South East ports last week due to market forces.

Fishers along the South East coast currently are dealing with bad weather but catch rates are high.

The weather has kept numerous boats in port and so the price has spiked.

The 2025/26 season began on September 1 and some fishers have been slow to put to sea.

They have nine months to catch their quota and they are also permitted to roll over a small percentage into the 2026/27 season.

The domestic market in the capital city is currently charging retail customers $145 per kilogram for cooked fresh lobsters while the delicacy is back on the menus of several SE eateries at eye-watering prices.

Access problems at Cape Jaffa have reportedly again led to 20 local boats temporarily shifting to Robe.

The current algal bloom is not affecting the Southern Zone fishery.
