Lunch back on the table

The Penola Lions Club Seniors Lunch will be returning on Sunday, October 23 after a two-year hiatus due to COVID.
Penola seniors will gather at the Penola Bowling Club from 12pm for a 12.30pm start to enjoy a meal together.

Penola Lions Club president Jeff Hoare said the Seniors Lunch was well-attended each year and a two-course meal would be served, with two choices for a main followed by dessert.

“We put this Lions Club lunch on for many years, I have been involved for the last 13 years now,” Mr Hoare said.

“We get about 100 along, we’re also putting it on in Seniors Month, which is October.

“It’s something we have enjoyed doing, it’s an opportunity for seniors to get together.

“They do not often meet as a big group, so it’s a good day for the seniors and an opportunity for them to meet up with their friends, have a good lunch in good surroundings.”

Mr Hoare said the event was now run a bit differently and the Penola Bowling Club will be organising most of the lunch.

“We have got a lot of ageing people now so we have had to change things a bit, we have not got the people that can go all day now,” he said.

“We used to have a lot of people involved in it and do it ourselves, it was quite a busy day.”

Mr Hoare said Penola Lions Club members would help out with duties such as tidying up, waiting on tables and clearing plates.

The Penola Ukelele Group will provide entertainment on the afternoon and a raffle will be drawn.

Mr Hoare encouraged Penola seniors to attend because the lunch was a great way to get some normality back in their lives after COVID.

“They have all been through fairly difficult times, the weather has been foul lately, we have just come through a long winter, we have had COVID starting to clear a bit now,” he said.

“It will be nice if we have a nice day for it and it’s a good opportunity for people to get out and about and resume the life they used to have before COVID came along.

“I’m looking forward to it, I know our members are very happy to do it and we hope it is a great success.”
