Make-a-Wish branch shuts

Mount Gambier’s Make-A-Wish branch has made the tough decision to close the doors in its 30th year of supporting the community.

Former vice-president Brian Brooksby said dwindling volunteer numbers had left the group with no choice.

“Group members are elderly, so most do not have time between volunteering for other groups, work and health problems, leaving only a few group members to handle the workload which is unrealistic,” he said.

“Several members will stay on as friends of Make-A-Wish advertising the cause.”

Since its inception in Mount Gambier the branch has made more than 60 wishes come true for terminally ill children.

“We are contacted when a wish is granted in our area, and we have a conversation with the parents and child to determine what the child would like,” Mr Brooksby said.

“We have found wishes bring joy and hope to children improving their mental state in such a difficult time.”

Mr Brooksby said the branch could reopen again if young members were to step up and volunteer.

Mr Brooksby said he wanted the community to know that Make-A-Wish was still available.

“The closing of the Make-A-Wish Mount Gambier branch means more wishes will go through the Melbourne Headquarters and be referred the branch closest to the recipient,” he said.
