MAKE UTES GREAT AGAIN

Since taking the GWM Cannon Alpha Ultra for a test drive late last week, more than a few people have stopped me to ask “Is it any good”.

“Well it’s big! It’s got a 2.4 litre turbo diesel engine, front and rear differential lock for off-roading, and a huge 14.6” infotainment screen,” I tell them, “plus a sunroof, heated and cooled seats, all the safety tech you could ask for. And it’s got voice control. All for $55,990”

“Yeah, but is it any good?” they insist.

And I know what they’re really asking. As the newest kid on the block in Mount Gambier’s already competitive car market they are coming in at a price point five figures less than some of the competition. So what’s the catch?

The short answer is none – it’s actually good.

The long answer is it’s actually really, really good.

The external styling is arguably as impressive as anything else you will find on the road, leaning towards the increasingly popular American pick-up truck aesthetic.

GWM is not shy about announcing its presence, with the Cannon’s circular logo featured front and centre in the chrome accented grill, along the check-plate style running board, wheel hubs and prominently on the unique, dual action barn door tail gate which can be swung open or lowered with the push of a button.

Even the key fob to unlock and enter the vehicle is shaped the same way.

However, pressing the unlock button and stepping up into the cabin, it is at this point that you get your first “wow” moment.

Leather electric seats, faux wood trim, thoughtfully placed control clusters, digital drivers display and an infotainment system so large it would make your iPad blush.

The sense of luxury is more than skin deep as the GWM Cannon Ultra boasts a range of quality of life features from heated and cooled seats, a heated steering wheel, voice controls, sunroof, wireless charging for your phone – which it will remind you not to leave it behind if you turn the car off while it is still in the charging cradle.

Starting the car brings the driver’s seat automatically back into its last used position, and activates a camera feed to show any obstacles around the vehicle before you take off.

A very nice start to the driving experience.

The driving position offers a clear and unobstructed view over traffic when pulling out onto Jubilee Highway, while the 2.4 litre turbo diesel engine, paired with a smooth 9 gear automatic transmissions provides plenty of pick up as we merge into traffic.

Despite it’s size – coming in at 1.991m wide and 5.445m long – handling is fantastically light and consistent.

“Hello GWM, open the sunroof” I announce. Almost instantly the shade over retracts, allowing sun beams almost as wide as my smile to light the cabin.

“Open windows”, and “Turn radio up to 30%” I instruct, with the vehicle responding in turn.

The sun’s beaming in, the wind’s in my hair, music fills the cabin and not once have I taken my eyes off the road to find or fiddle with manual controls.

Escaping the bitumen and peeling onto a dirt track gives the first indication the Cannon Alpha Ultra is as capable as it is stylish. The ride remains comfortable and quiet and, most importantly over the rougher, loose terrain, stable.

If there is a catch to getting this level of performance and comfort for just $55,990 on road, I am yet to find it.

In fact, GWM are so confident in their vehicles, they offer a 7-year unlimited kilometre warranty, alongside 5-year roadside assistance coverage for stress-free driving.

So, for the sceptics out there, I say seeing is believing, so don’t just take my word for it.

Pop in and see the team at OGR GWM at 132-138 Jubilee Highway West, Mount Gambier or contact the dealership on 8724 1111.

While you’re at it, get them to show you the rest of the GWM Cannon range in stock.

Forego a few of the creature comforts and you could be driving away in one for as little as $37,490.

Now that’s hard to argue with.
