Mary MacKillop Memorial School held a ‘flood-raiser’ to raise funds for those impacted by the recent floods in New South Wales and Queensland.
The students came to school with a gold coin donation and were decked out in wet-weather gear such as rubber boots, raincoats and umbrellas.
The school community raised close to $100 for the St Vinnies Flood Appeal.
Principal Nicole Coote said they were also raising money for Project Compassion during lent, an appeal for vulnerable overseas countries, but this flood fundraiser was closer to home.
“It is something the children at school have been talking about and seeing on the news, wanting to do something to help out,” Ms Coote said.
“It is just really raising awareness that here in Australia we have our own community who are really struggling at the moment.”
Ms Coote said one of the student’s grandparents were moving to Queensland but they currently could not due to the flooding, which showed how the floods impacted people in this region.
“Even though it is not in our state, it is still impacting kids as well and they understand,” Ms Coote said.
“They have that understanding of what that would be like to have your home inundated by water and you just cannot control it.
“St Mary of the Cross, a big quote from her is ‘never see a need without doing something about it,’ so at the school that is a value that we hold dear.
“And like we say, ‘anything is better than nothing’.”
