Masters tournament returns to diamond

The annual Mount Gambier Baseball Masters tournament makes an anticipated return to Blue Lake Sports Park tomorrow. For the 14th time the Mount Gambier Legends Baseball Club is hosting the three-day competition.

Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions last year the tournament did not go ahead, but the carnival is a goer in 2021 with a gain of three teams from the 2019 edition. Nine teams have agreed to participate in the event that has official sanctioning from the Australian Baseball Federation.

Mount Gambier is represented by four clubs – Central, Mount Gambier Tigers, Mt. Gambier Misfits and the Legends. Four sides from Adelaide including two from the Northern Aces, Adelaide Aces and Playford City have accepted the invitation.

From Victoria, Williamstown Rangers, which is a combination of players from Williamstown and Naracoorte will also compete.

Two pools have been designated with Pool A made of Central, Williamstown Rangers, Mount Gambier Misfits and Northern Aces Blue. Pool B consists of Adelaide Aces, Mount Gambier Tigers, Northern Aces Grey, Playford City and Willy Rangers.

All sides will play four 90-minute games each and two diamonds will be constantly in use over the weekend. Two games will be played on Friday with the first game on Diamond 1 starting at 6.00pm between Central and Misfits.

The final game for the day between the Legends and Playford City starts at 7.45pm under lights. Saturday will be all action with 11 games from 9am to 7.45pm. A round of five games will complete the tournament on Sunday with the first at 9.30am.

In pool A the two games consist of rounds playing for medallions with third and fourth fighting for bronze, while first and second play for gold and silver. In Pool B the medallions are awarded in finishing order.

The winning team in each Pool will have their name engraved on the perpetual trophy and medallions will be presented to the players in the first, second and third ranked teams.

Full catering facilities are available at the baseball clubrooms all weekend.
