MGNA action returns to courts

The excitement and smiles could be seen both on and off the court as the U13B’s returned for round one of the 2022 Mount Gambier Netball Association season.

Junior Netball

One of the key matches was played between Zodiacs and Hobitz, with both teams bubbling with determination and fierceness.

Zodiacs proved to be strong during the match, with many intercepts and drive throughout these little players proving exciting for spectators.

The work in the Zodiacs third by Ella Gray, Addison Schloithe, captain Tayah Fraser and Renae Lindner featured smart passes and opportunities for goals with excellent leading from Gray herself.

The Hobitz side refused to give up and showed admirable determination. Maliya Wingard played a brilliant game at centre during the second half with help to pass the ball into the Hobitz third.

Jess Oxlade and Ava Edwards both played a great defensive game as goal defence and goalkeeper respectively.

The game was fast-paced with plenty of energy from the youngsters, however the pace slowed by the fourth quarter as only one goal from Edwards was put up.

Zodiacs came out on top with a score of 13-4, but both teams shook hands and kept smiling, just happy to be back on court for a new season.

Senior Netball

The wait was over as the Mount Gambier Netball Association A Grade players took to the court for the first time in the 2022 season on Saturday.

In sunny conditions, an Anzac ceremony was held before games started with Hobitz and Intruders taking the court in a match that caught the eye.

Both defence and attacking sides were strong in the first quarter, especially from Intruders goal defence Christie McCourt and goal keeper Ebony Leggett.

The relationship between Intruders goal shooter Kahli Rolton and goal attack captain Kate Biszko was perfect to watch as they shot 44 goals in the first half.

Hobitz could feel the hurt coming from the Intruders goal circle but still fought hard each quarter.

Centre Kym Stewart, wing attack Kellie Wallace and goal attack Joval Gowel were the key drivers behind the Hobitz fight with the latter having a brilliant defensive moment in the second quarter smacking the ball out of court.

But Intruders continued the pressure throughout the match and the teamwork of Rolton and Biszko proved hard to counter.

Gowel and goal shooter Dani Russell worked well in the Hobitz circle when the ball was fed in, even a quick shoe tie from Russell in the third quarter was able to help her get in a brilliant position to score.

The Intruders proved hard to beat throughout the final quarter with the team taking a 40-point win over Hobitz 87-47.

It will be interesting to watch the progression of these teams during the 2022 season.

The other A Grade battle was an unforgettable affair with Zodiacs and Saints trading blows in a classic encounter.

Nothing separated the rivals across the four quarters and fans were kept guessing until the final whistle.

In the end Saints prevailed by just two goals after a match where both sides can depart with their heads held high.
