Mount Gambier Hospital midwife Elle Hood has spoken in a public forum of her support for the Live Births Bill which is currently before State Parliament.
It is a private piece of legislation promoted by her husband and Liberal frontbench MLC Ben Hood.
The couple were recently interviewed at their Mount Gambier home by activist and law professor Dr Joanna Howe.
Lasting almost 20 minutes, the interview has been posted to social media and shared by Mr Hood.
In earlier speeches to the Legislative Council, Mr Hood spoke of the experiences of his wife in her midwifery work.
The mother of their two daughters and son, Ms Hood explained in the online interview her career choice after initially working as a labourer.
She had been inspired by a midwife who had supported her with her breastfeeding issues by paying weekly visits for 10 weeks.
That experience put Ms Hood on the path to a profession where she could help people.
After completing her university studies in 2012 and graduating as a registered nurse, Ms Hood overtook further study and training to become a midwife.
“I am quite shocked it is a political issue,” Ms Hood said.
“How can people kill a viable baby? Babies can survive at 28 weeks.
“I delivered a baby boy at 28 weeks and he had some respiratory problems. I still see him as I also do immunisations.
“He is now four and grown up.”
Ms Hood said her husband was a Christian but she was not.
“This is a moral issue and not a Christian issue,” she said.
“I hope people are educated about the Live Births Bill and see what it is actually about.
“It is about the right of those little babies to live.”
