Aprominent Mount Gambier sporting organisation will score a hole in one this week as it celebrates a significant milestone.
The Blue Lake Golf Club will mark its 40th anniversary with a cocktail party on Friday at the Blue Lake Bar and Bistro from 6pm.
There will be speeches, a raffle, a two hour happy hour and finger food along with some fun and reminiscing by past and present patrons.
There is much to reminisce about on the momentous occasion for Blue Lake Golf Club life members Peter Sealey and Gavin Sparrow.
Since the start of the club until now there have been many changes including an additional nine holes, a driving range, sponsor signs at each hole, an underpass tunnel and a mini putt putt course.
Mr Sparrow said despite the club officially opening in 1984, the first competition was held in February 1981 coordinated by six men.
“The course was only 4130 metres (compared to 5480m today) in those days and you would play it twice,” he said.
“It was decided to hold a monthly competition and the competition fee was set at 50 cents and then the first year we had 20 players attending so it was decided to play a weekly competition.
“The interest grew and around 1984, around 40 people were playing on a regular basis and Bob Malone who was one of the six guys decided we should start a golf club and that is where it all started.”
