Mill gives tradies solid career start

OneFortyOne is looking to take on new apprentices to start in the Jubilee Sawmill in 2022.

Maintenance manager Andrew Hoath said every two years OneFortyOne looks to add enthusiastic apprentices to the trade team.

“This year we’re looking for an electrical apprentice, mechanical fitter, and an apprentice saw technician,” Mr Hoath said.

“First and foremost we look for a great attitude and openness to learning.

“If you have got that, it’ll be easier and more rewarding for you to learn and continue to learn beyond your apprenticeship into your trade.”

Because of the large size of the Jubilee Sawmill, apprentices are exposed to a diverse range of experiences within the trades.

“The plant runs reliably so there’s time to learn how to service parts and manufacture items,” Mr Hoath said.

“There is also opportunity for reactive problem solving when investigating machine faults, and because of the size of the team, our apprentices learn with experienced tradespeople.”

Second year electrical apprentice Harry Johnson is doing just that.

Inspired by his father and uncle, Mr Johnson started his apprenticeship at OneFortyOne in 2019, and has enjoyed working on a range of projects.

“Every day is different,” he said.

“I like the variety of things we get to do, it makes learning easier and work more interesting.

“My dad and uncle are both electricians.

“Dad did his apprenticeship at Nangwarry and my uncle did his here at Jubilee.

“I particularly like learning the PLC work and want to eventually go into electrical engineering.”

Mr Hoath said the last intake of apprentices have been a great addition to the team.

“All of our apprentices are really inquisitive and confident and have already contributed a lot.

“Under the guidance of our tradespeople, they’re continuing to improve their skills and knowledge,” he said.

“We’re looking forward to seeing this year’s applications, and hopefully getting some new apprentices on the crew.”
