Millicent graves restored

A guided tour of the restored graves at the older section of the Millicent Cemetery will be provided next month.

The guide will be local historian Noel Boyle who has coordinated volunteers in the restoration of the sacred area which dates back to the nineteenth century.

His free hour-long tour starts at 2pm on October 10 and forms part of the annual Celebrate Seniors program.

Mr Boyle is a renowned public speaker and will share the personal histories of those at rest.

He is the president of the South East Family History Group which has staged monthly working bees at the cemetery for several years.

Their voluntary efforts were recently boosted by 10 Vestas windfarm employees who each worked for five hours at the historic site.

“At the Vestas working bee 46 graves were worked on. Some had stone surrounds aligned while three had headstones straightened. A number of stones were taken away and replaced by gravel supplied by Wattle Range Council,” Mr Boyle said.

“A special thank you to Millicent builders Graham and Julie Reilly for the kind donation of the pallet and a half of limestone ashlars that were used.

“A welding team from Vestas restored broken wrought iron surrounds.
