Volunteers have begun the laborious task of removing the aluminium inside running rail at the Millicent Racecourse.
While this work is undertaken, regular training activities have been suspended.
The new synthetic running rail is being installed at a cost of $70,000.
As the course was built in the 1930s, its circuit is an Imperial mile of 1760 yards or 1500 metres.
Where possible, the aluminium running rails will be salvaged and used to replace the outside wooden running rails.
Large portions of the running rails were damaged by a mini-tornado in December 2023.
The last official meeting was held there in 1969 but the Millicent Racing Club has a five-year aim to bring back the “Sport of Kings” with up to seven races on the card.
To this end, the committee is continuing to work on such essential track improvements as the running rails and negotiate with such stakeholders as Racing SA and a local bookmaker.
Since the last official meeting at Millicent was held 56 years ago, the club has mostly only hosted one Cup meeting per year ever since at either Penola or Mount Gambier.
