Modern pain management insight

An interesting public lecture, How to Understand and Manage Chronic Pain, was recently held at the University of South Australia Mount Gambier Campus.

The lecture was presented by UniSA’s chair in physiotherapy Professor Lorimer Mosely AO who explored advances in how to manage chronic pain.

Prof Moseley is a world-recognised expert pain scientist and science educator who said his “fascination” of humans led him to become a physiotherapist for seven years, then a neuroscientist, a pain scientist and a science educator.

Prof Moseley focused on four key messages about pain, which were that pain protects people and promotes recovery, persistent pain overprotects people and prevents recovery, many factors influence pain and there are many ways to reduce pain and promote recovery.

UniSA Mount Gambier regional manager Ian McKay received many comments about the presentation and the information provided.

“There was a great deal of positive conversation amongst attendees and between attendees and Professor Mosely over supper, which was indicative of how well received the lecture was,” Mr McKay said.

“Our campus aims to bring relevant and insightful speakers and researchers to present as part of our free public lecture series, and Professor Moseley’s lecture was a wonderful example of the high quality of these presentations.”

UniSA Mount Gambier Campus presents a free public lecture series in most months throughout the year.

The next lecture on July 26 will feature Nic Newling speaking about mental health and well-being, which is being presented in conjunction with StandBy Support After Suicide.
