Molly shines on national stage

One of Mount Gambier’s up and coming junior cyclists has starred at the AusCycling Junior Track Nationals in Queensland.

Rising cycling star Molly Opperman delivered a stellar performance at the 2025 track nationals, securing podium finishes and showcasing remarkable determination.

Competing in four events, Molly finished fifth in the sprint, claimed bronze in the 500m time trial and took silver in the Keirin, demonstrating her speed and skill against Australia’s best junior riders.

The 14-year-old’s resilience was on full display in the points race, where she suffered a crash but showed incredible grit by getting back on her bike to complete the event.

With her impressive results at the nationals, Opperman continues to cement her status as a rising star in Australian track cycling.

Following her success, the youngster expressed her gratitude to her coaches and the Limestone Coast Regional Sporting Academy for their ongoing support in her cycling journey.

Molly said she was thrilled with her success, which followed plenty of years of hard work.

“This year’s nationals was fun as I had lots of friends from around Australia there,” she said.

“My training program was mainly sprinting focusing on the 200m and 500m events.

“Last year in the Keirin event I got seventh and I was determined to beat that this year. I was shocked when I got second – I was jumping around.

Molly said she surprised even herself in the competition’s last event of the 500m.

“I did not know what to expect as I was racing off with another girl from SA who was good,” she said.

“I beat her by a second – which is a lot.

“I have to thank my parents for allowing me to go and my coaches, especially Kaitlin Ward.”
