Money put into empty Millicent bank

ASouth East bank is set to change hands after being empty for exactly two years.

Millicent lost its Commonwealth Bank branch in 2020 while local face-to-face banking services further declined when BankSA, Peoples Choice Credit Union and the Millicent Post Office trimmed their opening hours.

The empty bank building in George Street was purpose-built for the Commonwealth Bank in 1961 by prominent Millicent firm Zanello and Buffon Pty Ltd.

Soon after its closure, it was listed for sale with a Millicent real estate firm for $255,000.

Until the 1980s, Millicent had six staffed banks with the now-defunct Bank of Adelaide, Westpac and the State Bank of South Australia also present.

The only remaining bank branches are the ANZ and BankSA.
