Mount Gambier athletes punch above weight at strongman festival

A contingent of Mount Gambier athletes recently competed at the Compound Strongman Festival at Castlemaine in Victoria.

The two-day event was attended by hundreds of competitors from around Australia and Mount Gambier’s group took part in the “chaos” competition. No less than 100 competitors entered the Intermediate competition.

Participants had to complete the duckwalk/yoke medley, the log medley/reps, slver dollar deadlift for max, farmers carnage – standard grip/fat grip combo – and sandbag loading medley.

Rordon Walker impressed to finish second in under 105kg, which consisted of 16 competitors. Joel Olsder also was the runner-up in under 80kg. The pair both missed first place by a single rep, which made for an exciting finish.

Brad Wagner and Tanita Rose both finished fourth in the under 80kg and under 64kg classes respectively. Sophie Morrison placed fifth in open, while Chris Povey was 12th of 17 competitors in the men’s open field.

A “carnage” competition also took place to complete the festival, which is traditionally Victoria’s Strongest Man and Woman.

However this year it was opened up to the nation, due to the limited competitions because of COVID-19.
