Mount Gambier golfer plays ‘round of his life’

Another beautiful day greeted players on Thursday and there were plenty of good scores posted.

Tom Jellesma posted the round of the day with a sensational 44 stableford points which equates to a 76 off the stick for the 12 marker.

Two bogeys and a birdie meant a front nine of 1 over the card 37 with the tougher back nine to come.

Jellesma started the back nine with bogeys on holes 10, 11 and 12 but from there he was square with the card for the last six holes easily winning the $100 voucher.

Brian Norman, John Kirby and Tony Klug all posted 39 points with Norman’s birdie on the last getting him the second-place voucher on count-back.

Neil Richardson and Graham Allen posted 38 points while Des Guerin, Brian Ashby, Stephen Herbert and David Boyce all managed 37 points.

Saturday’s competition was Par with a few members missing playing the Wayne Scutter Memorial tournament at Blue Lake Golf Links but still a field of over 100 players tried their best however none of them could better Mathew Bowering on six up.

The 15 marker had a fantastic front nine of one over the card 37 which left him six up.

The back nine was a bit tougher but pluses on the 11th and 16th counteracted minuses on the 10th and 18th to finish square for the nine.

An 80 off the stick and the B Grade winners voucher capped off an excellent day’s golf.

Garry McCormack finished second with five up and ruing a wipe on the last.

In A grade it was popular clubman Paul Reade taking the $40 voucher with three up. A very solid and consistent round with only the one loss for the day on the toughest rated 17th.

Count-back reared its ugly head again as David Anderson also on three up was relegated to second place due to a quieter back nine.

In C Grade Barry Kuhl claimed first place finishing on one up. Kevin Lennon was relegated to second place due to count-back again!

The ball rundown extended to minus one with local pro John Martin grabbing the last ball.

Nearest the pins belonged to Chris Gabriel on the 8th and Andrew Birks on the 16th.
