Mount Gambier recreation centre committee to cease operation

Mount Gambier’s Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre Committee will no longer exist.

The decision to cease the operation of the committee was decided at Mount Gambier City Council’s September monthly meeting.

A report was tabled at the meeting and was a topic of further discussion.

Councillor Paul Jenner moved that with the construction of the centre now well progressed and adequately managed by the administration, its function be considered as having been completed.

It was also moved that all future matters associated with the centre be presented directly to council to ensure an appropriate level of oversight of the project was maintained.

The motions were seconded by Cr Kate Amoroso.

Council’s involvement with the centre will continue with the recent appointment of Cr Sonya Mezinec as representative on the project control group.

The position of a council representative had become available due to the recent vacancy of the committee’s presiding member.

Cr Ben Hood vacated the position when his application for leave of absence was successfully passed at council’s recent monthly meeting.

With the anticipated resignation of Cr Hood, council’s chief executive notified members of the vacancy. Subsequently invitation for written nominations to fill the position were sought.

Councillors had until September 15 to nominate, with just a single nomination received.

Cr Mezinec was appointed for a term of one year which started on October 1.

The report stated the term of one year was to coincide with the caretaker period associated with the November 2022 local government elections.
