Apopular Limestone Coast MP has been charged with assault, following an incident allegedly involving his wife.
Member for MacKillop Nick McBride was arrested and charged on April 10 at Norwood.
A SAPOL spokesperson said, while unable to identify the person, that a 55-year-old Limestone Coast man had been charged with three counts of assault on a person known to him.
“He has been bailed to the Naracoorte Magistrates Court on 7 May,” the spokesperson said.
“The matter is before the court, and no further detail will be supplied.”
Mr McBride was elected as a Liberal member of parliament in 2018, before quitting the party in 2023 to sit as an independent.
His wife of 30 years Katherine has told city media that she was “OK” but did not want to elaborate.
“I do not wish to comment on the situation,” she said.
Mrs McBride is a nurse and also works in the aged care sector.
The couple share two children.
She has previously held political aspirations, at the last Federal Election in 2023 she unsuccessfully challenged incumbent Tony Pasin for Liberal pre-selection for the seat of Barker.
The SE Voice contacted Mr McBride’s office yesterday, however a request for comment was declined.
Calls to Mr McBride and his Adelaide lawyer were also not returned.
Speculation is rife in political circles the charges may prompt Mr McBride to resign as the Member for MacKillop, which would prompt a by-election, given the State Election is not scheduled until March 2026.
