MSE finals preview

The undisputed two top teams clash at Kalangadoo when Hatherleigh visits in the 18th and last minor round fixture of the Mid South East Football League on Saturday.

The Magpies long ago secured the minor premiership and its only blemish was a surprise 42-point loss to the Eagles which was set up by an unstoppable eight-goal opening term blitz.

There have been 391 other terms of football played in the MSEFL so far in 2022 but that one is probably the only reason bookies are said to be still taking bets on the outcome of the grand final.

Putting it simply, Hatherleigh played champagne football with ruckman Mark Marriott leading the charge and then squared the remaining three terms.

Subsequent form has earned Kalangadoo the premiership favourite status but a Hatherleigh win cannot be ruled out.

Port MacDonnell v Glencoe

Can Glencoe achieve a remarkable renaissance and complete the minor round with a sixth consecutive
win?

At the beginning of last month, the oldest club in consecutive existence in the MSEFL was facing its first-ever wooden spoon since it was formed 112 years ago.

Did that unhappy fact spur the maroon-and-golds into action or was it the recovery from injury of several key players including current captain, past coach and Mail medallist Zacc Cocks?

The club has achieved a season-high ranking of fifth on the back of the remarkable form of Cocks in all eight games he has played.

After allowing a full 12 months to recover from a knee reconstruction, Cocks is a chance of claiming his second league medal.

The Demons were scheduled to host, but it had to be transferred to Glencoe on account of the poor surface of the oval.

The seasiders will be keen to take winning form into the major round.

However, if the visitors can lower the colours of the reigning premiers, they are almost guaranteed of keeping fifth spot.

Nangwarry v Robe

When Nangwarry visited the seaside in round nine, it repeatedly penetrated the Robe defence to score 12.6 and go down by a relatively modest tally of 34 points.

If that score line can be repeated at home in the final game of 2022, the Saints will be happy.

However, the form of the home side suggests otherwise as the impact of COVID and injuries have robbed the team of much of its firepower.

The Roosters will miss the finals for the first time in several seasons but can still salvage fifth position if round 18 results go their way.

Mount Burr v Tantanoola

Many in the Tantanoola camp will be pleased to reach for the mothballs for their jumpers at 5pm on Saturday after their last match in 2022 is contested at Mick and Jean Walker Oval at Mount Burr.

The score line for the Tigers at home against minor premiers Kalangadoo on Saturday does not bare repeating but it could act as a spur when the club takes on its cross-town rivals.

The Mozzies will be looking for a win to maintain confidence levels for their second trip to Robe in the space of a fortnight.

With only pride at stake, Mount Burr will not be looking for any injuries on the eve of its much-anticipated return to major round action.
