Mundulla emerges as footy league benchmark

The second round of the Limestone Coast Women’s Football League got under way this week, with some big scores again recorded.

Mundulla v Nangwarry

The Nangwarry Saints faced the Mundulla Tigers on Sunday in Mundulla and could not compete with the Tigers’ firepower they brought on their home deck in Limestone Coast Women’s Footbal round 2 action.

Mundulla came out strong in the opening term and dominated the possession, with Nangwarry unable to find an answer for the Tigers’ attack as they scored eight goals in the term.

After a big quarter the Tigers held a 57 point lead.

The Tigers improved from their first quarter efforts as they continued to pile on the goals in the second quarter, adding nine to their total to go into the half time break leading by 114 points.

Mundulla did not show any signs of slowing down as they continued to run up the score, kicking six in the third quarter and holding a 152 point lead at the last change.

In the final term the Saints were able to slightly slow down the Tigers, holding them to only three goals.

However, Nangwarry continued to struggle getting the ball up forward as the Tigers continuously denied them chances to score.

It was a great team win for the Tigers as they had players contributing across the board with Brooke Ballinger and Kelsey Batt bagging six goals each while the captains Erin Horsnell and Melody Maddern combined for eight goals.

Mundulla defeated Nangwarry 26.20 (176) to 0.0 (0).

North Gambier v South Gambier

North Gambier came away with their first win of the season in their first game as they faced South Gambier in Kongorong on Sunday.

The Tigers started strong in the opening term and did not show any signs of rust.

They had control of most of the possession and got out to a solid 32 point lead, kicking five goals in the quarter.

Defensively the Dees improved in the second quarter as they held the Tigers to only two goals.

HARD FOUGHT WIN: Gemma Kemp and Kongorong came away with a hard fought first win of the season on Sunday.

However they could not get much going in the forward line that would help cut into North’s lead and by halftime the Tigers held a 48 point lead.

In the third term the Dees finally got some reward in the forward line as they hit the scoreboard with a goal.

It was not enough to rattle the Tigers as they kicked four goals in the quarter and headed into the final term with a 69 point lead.

The Dees played well defensively in the last quarter, holding the Tigers to a single goal.

But once again it was a struggle to put points on the board as they went scoreless in the quarter to end the game.

North Gambier’s Alice Tentye had a field day on Sunday, kicking nine goals in the win.

North Gambier defeated South Gambier 12.11 (83) to 1.0 (6).

Kybybolite v Millicent

Kybyboilte came away with their second win of the season in a hard fought battle with Millicent.

Both sides were evenly matched in the opening term as they both registered a goal as well as two minor scores, heading into the first break with the scores tied eight apiece.

The Tigers began to pull away from the Saints in the second term, holding them scoreless while slotting two of their own goals.

At half time the Tigers held a 15 point lead.

The Saints improved from the previous quarter as they chipped into the Tigers’ lead, kicking a goal and letting a couple of chances get away from them with two behinds to their name as well.

The Tigers only managed one goal in the quarter, however they still held a 13 point lead heading into the final term.

Millicent gave it their all in the final term as they held the Tigers to only two minor scores.

However, despite having a chance to snatch the win, the Saints came close, kicking two goals, but it was not enough as they fell short by three points.

Kyby’s Amelia Frick finished as the side’s best while Elle Treloar kicked two goals in the win.

Kybybolite defeated Millicent 4.7 (31) to 4.4 (28).

Kongorong v Casterton Sandford

Kongorong picked up their first win of the season on Sunday, defeating Casterton in Kongorong.

Both sides started slow in the opening term as the Hawks were able to score the only six-pointer in the quarter.

The Hawks only managed one major score in the second quarter, while the Cats registered a minor score which took them into half time trailing by 11 points.

In the second half the Hawks began to pull away from the Cats as they held them to only one goal while adding two more goals to their total in the third term.

The Cats had a better defensive performance in the last stanza as they held the Hawks scoreless, however the visitors also struggled to score in the final term.

Kongorong’s Riley Buckingham put together a great performance in the win while Mahli Pannenburg led the way for her team in goals with two for the day.

Kongorong defeated Casterton Sandford 4.1 (25) to 1.2 (8).
