Alocal artist has brought a brush of colour to a popular Mount Gambier precinct through the City of Mount Gambier Creative Arts Fund.
Mount Gambier artist Lucy Bonnin recently completed commissioned mural ‘Welcome Home’ in the Mount Gambier rail lands.
The bright mural covers an approximately 25m x 9m wall adjacent to the Woolstore Brewery and features a bundle of colourful balloons.
Ms Bonnin said she was inspired to give life and colour to the previously grey limestone wall that could be enjoyed by all members of the community.
“I thought ‘what better than balloons!’ My son and I ride past there almost every second day and I wanted him to be able to see something he could understand, get excited about and get involved with,” she said.
“The disabled community have actually reached out and said how much their kids enjoy it and it is so lovely how excited they get because they can actually be involved and understand it.
“Balloons signify so many things like celebration and also things like love and loss and grief. They can signify whatever you want so I wanted it to be a place where people could come and take photos if it is their birthday and I have already been sent wedding photos of it and even graduations.
“Because the rail lands are such a main spot of coming and going, it was a celebration when your family would arrive or when they leave so balloons were often seen down there anyway.”
