Murphies end netball drought

A Grade – Glencoe def Kalangadoo

In blustery wet wintry conditions the A Grade Mid South East Netball Association Grand Final between Glencoe and Kalangadoo was one for the history books.

Both teams turned the ball over numerous times before Abbey Duncan scored the first goal of the match for the Magpies.

Kalangadoo had some calls go its way as both teams adjusted to the Adelaide umpires, with the reigning premiers leading by four goals before Glencoe’s Jenna Paproth scored her side’s first goal six minutes into the match.

Donna Jaeschke and Jayde Peacock worked overtime for their respective sides through the middle and did not give each other an inch.

Glencoe finally settled into its style of game late in the quarter to pull Kalangadoo’s lead back to one goal with some great defence by Sarah Edwards and Chantelle Cocks.

The tricky conditions forced both teams to make mistakes in the second term with the Murphies finally in scoring form.

Kalangadoo’s defence in Lauren Kain and Reanna Wetherall worked well together at their end to get back in front.

Chantelle Cocks and Sarah Edwards at the other end were pouncing on crumbs that were missed by the Magpies, but they still held on to a two-goal lead at the main break.

Glencoe opened the third quarter with a goal from Paproth, which had the game back even early in the third as the rain came down.

The Murphies then took the lead for the first time in the match six minutes into the third quarter before a squall came through which made shooting difficult for both sides.

Glencoe was able to better handle the conditions to gain a three goal lead.

At the final change Kain called time as Georgia Gentile came on at goal defence.

But this did nothing to lessen Glencoe’s endeavour for the ball as Malinda Markiewicz started to get more of the ball as the side scored the first four goals of the final term.

The Magpies continued to work hard to try and lessen the margin, but Glencoe’s defensive pressure throughout the court was too much on their way to score a drought-breaking 40-27 win.
