Mystery sleuths on the case

Limestone Coast residents are set to don their detective hats and help solve a mystery case at Millicent. Sort of.

The “crime” is actually the annual Murder in the Museum Melodrama which will be held in the Millicent National Trust Museum on the night of April 2.

After COVID-related cancellations in 2020 and 2021, around 30 Trust and community members are again ready to don costumes and entertain crowds.

The previous four Murder in the Museum Melodrama events have sold out and producer Chris Hollingsworth is putting the cast through their paces in rehearsals.

A fresh script is produced each year and is designed to show off the museum’s remarkable collection which includes a steam train locomotive, horse-drawn vehicles and farming implements.

The far-fetched scenario to be acted involves a shipwreck off the South East coast with the passengers and crew encountering wicked pirates and other assorted scoundrels.

Along the way, there is a love affair while passenger Lord Formley is found murdered.

Millicent National Trust Museum vice chairman Noel Boyle is again in the cast and said preparations were going well.

Mr Boyle is well known for spending more than 40 years at the Millicent post office but the actor-in-him is seen each “Fright Night”.

He said the National Trust was grateful to Ms Hollingsworth for bringing the production together.

“It is an exciting event involving members of the community with lots of fun and frivolity,” Mr Boyle said.

“Escorted tours to view the melodrama will be every 15 minutes starting from 5:30pm with the last being at 8pm.

“The tour lasts approximately 50 minutes and the cost is $10.

“Bookings are essential and tours can be booked at the Millicent Tourist Information Centre.

“After the tour, you will be given the opportunity to vote on the murderer, best actor and best costume.

“Those who correctly pick the murderer will go in a lucky drawer for a chance to win a four-course dinner for two at The Tasting Room at Mayura Station.

“Your ticket also entitles you to free entry to the museum on the following day.”

The Murder in the Museum Melodrama is usually a feature of the annual Geltwood Craft Festival in Millicent.

The Geltwood organisers have decided to delay the 2022 festival until October.

Due to COVID-related issues, the quilting convention had been cancelled and the workshops had been postponed.
