Nature play project nears completion

Penola will soon have its very first nature play- ground at McCorquindale Park, to be completed by the end of this month. Project coordinator Josie Abbey received the grant to build the playground from Wattle Range Council in December.

“When the community infrastructure grants were announced we jumped on it and with the support of Beach Energy we were lucky enough to get a grant,” Ms Abbey said. “We have also received support from Bendigo Bank Penola, Penola Netball Club and Penola Net Set Go and Auskick group.

“We also have had fantastic support from BioGro and GEM Penola along with our local contractors and members of McCorquindale Park user groups. “Adelaide nature play constructors Climbing Tree, who were involved with other nature playgrounds at locations such as the Naracoorte Caves and Millicent, built the playground infrastructure.”

Ms Abbey said local contractors and members would help build the fence and the stepping logs and there were plans to hold a working bee. The playground will include features such as a slide, climbing wall, log scramble and stepping logs.

Ms Abbey said the playground had been constructed from mainly timber and rope and will be an exciting addition to the town as another play space for children to explore. “It’ll be great, I think it’s something different for the kids to play on,” Ms Abbey said. “I hope the kids love it.”

Local Penola business Beach Energy supported the grant application with $20,000. Beach’s Regional Manager Jon Conti said the business was pleased to help the local community. “Beach is very happy to be continuing our support of the local McCorquindale Park facilities with this great community-driven project,” he said.

“The new playground is in a much more visible location for parents and will give the kids a greater connection to their environment, the football and netball club and their community as a whole.” Ms Abbey said there would be an official opening held once the playground is complete.
