Netballers swing into second half of MSE season

The second half of the Mid South East Netball Association season swung into action on Saturday, with eight teams looking to measure progress from the first time they met.

Tantanoola proved too good for Robe at the seaside, while Glencoe comprehensively defeated Hatherleigh, Kalangadoo downed Port MacDonnell and Mount Burr was too strong for Kongorong.

Kalangadoo v Port MacDonnell

Kalangadoo hosted Port MacDonnell in the opening round of the second half of the season, with the match played in the clubs’ annual indigenous round.

It proved to be a great contest between the two sides and within the first five minutes of the game it was clear it was going to be a tight tussle.

The Magpies had their full list available, with Lauren Kain back on the court and given a big task on Megan Hein.

The first half of netball went back and forth, with both teams’ defensive pressure creating many turnovers.

Port MacDonnell’s Alana Berkefeld and Emily Thompson rebounded any missed opportunities from Kalangadoo, while Hein was a focal point in the Demons’ goal circle, converting any turnovers.

Alysha Coon and Jayde Peacock took turns in controlling the centre and flow of the court with both feeding their goalies with precision.

The second half became a little more one sided on the scoreboard but did not reflect the intensity of the game.

Berkfeld, Kate Faint and Thompson worked overtime to disrupt the flow of the Magpies’ attack line, but the feeding of Peacock and Jane Auld allowed Ebony McDiarmid and Abbey Duncan to find more space in the circle, shooting with accuracy on any turnovers the Pies’ defensive end of Georgia Gentile, Kain and Lara Munro created.

By the third break, Kalangadoo had a seven goal lead and through the defensive pressure of Kain and Munro in the circle, were able to regain possession for the Pies to increase their lead to 14 by the last whistle.

Peacock had the honour of being awarded the inaugural Brennan Indigenous Round medal and was also named best on court for the Pies with Munro.

Port MacDonnell’s Thompson and Cody Manning were named the Demons’ best.

Robe v Tantanoola

After a break and a close loss to Tantanoola last time, Robe’s A Grade team was determined to compete hard.

The Robe line up saw quite a few changes from the earlier round clash against the Tigers.

Tori Gluyas and Georgia Perkins took the court for the first time this year and Alex Neale stepped up into the A Grade.

The Tigers were a settled side and played with patience, player understanding and connection throughout the game.

The first quarter saw Robe settle quickly with Gluyas was shooting accurately and Robe opening up a lead in the first five minutes.

Tantanoola gained momentum through some strong rebounds from Bella Poulish and they moved the ball with composure through the mid court, finding Emma Gould under the post.

Scores were even at 11-all at the first break, with the Tigers having the momentum going into the second quarter, having switched Kate Bromley and Poulish at the break to apply strong defensive pressure to gain some advantage.

Gould and Jami Walker shared the scoring for Tantanoola, challenging the Robe defence.

All mid court players worked hard and Robe’s Lucy Perkins found some great space at the top of the circle, giving goalers Ashlee Hunt and Gluyas plenty of opportunity.

Kate Varcoe directed play for Tantanoola, however Georgia Perkins and Jennings worked hard to deny access and gained turn overs for Robe as the quarter went on, allowing Robe to regain possession and again the scored levelled at 23 all at half time.

As the momentum swings continued, Robe had some advantage until Gluyas suffered a knee injury and was out of the game.

Emillie Gould came into the shooting role and the Robe side took some time to resettle.

Defensive pressure at both ends made scoring difficult and the mid court pressure from Neale and Hunter for Robe and Walker and Varcoe saw the ball swing from one end to the other.

Tantanoola had a three-goal lead at three quarter time, but came out firing in the last to open the game up.

The Tigers moved the ball with speed and found some great angles to circle’s edge to access the goalies who were accurate in the last quarter.

The pressure saw Robe make some errors and Tantanoola was quick to pick up loose balls, making sure they got the ball through and scored from every opportunity, doubling Robe’s score in the last quarter.

Comfortable with their lead, the Tigers swung the tall Keryl Ousey into shooter half way through the last and eventually came with a solid 13 goal win, 53-40.

Robe’s best players were Perkins and Hunt, while for Tantanoola it was Varcoe and Shelby Ryan.

Hatherleigh v Glencoe

Glencoe won the toss and was quick to score the first goal, but from there Glencoe took full control and were able to score easy and quickly through Chantelle Cocks and Jenna Paproth.

Hatherleigh chipped away and worked hard to pin back the score, applying plenty of pressure down the court, but Glencoe was able to break through and continue to add to the score board, taking a 10-goal lead going into the first break.

The Eagles made changes in their attack in the second quarter while Glencoe remained unchanged, continuing to use Cocks as their go-to to score quickly.

Every ball was heavily contested by all players and Glencoe made the Eagles work hard for every pass.

Sarah Edwards worked overtime in the defence to provide her side with more opportunities to convert and went into the main break up by 17.

The home side switched things up yet again, but Glencoe continued to control the game and extend their lead, with both sides quick to jump on any loose balls.

Kali Nettle worked hard all game for the Eagles in attack, creating space and providing plenty of drive for her side.

Both teams were patient in attack when they needed to be, however any cross court ball was turned over by Glencoe who quickly made the Eagles pay.

The Murphies went into the final quarter up 52-27 and remained unchanged, with Cocks and Paproth continuing to combine well and make it difficult for Hatherleigh.

Glencoe was consistent from end to end, showing why they are a finals contender.

Despite the tight play, Hatherleigh continued to tick over the scoreboard and stayed competitive, however Glencoe was far too good and ran out winners by 36, 69-33.

Chelsea Owen and Demi Vanderhorst were named best players for Hatherleigh and for Glencoe it was Paproth and Caitlin Hentschke.

Mount Burr v Kongorong

An overcast day at Mount Burr welcomed the first game of the second round.

The home side started with the first centre pass, scoring the first two goals of the day.

Kongorong’s Tilah Buckingham was the focal point in the circle, with Megan Thiele pulling in any missed shots.

Mount Burr’s defenders Olivia Dean and Thiele drove the ball smoothly out of defence with the Mozzies taking advantage of the turnovers to be up 16-7 at quarter time.

The second quarter remained unchanged with pressure applied by Kongorong’s mid court, picking off any loose balls, with Evie Sealey gaining many valuable possessions.

Emily Lightbody and Rach Perry combined well in defence for Kongorong, creating many turnovers.

Although Mount Burr had control of the ball, they were unable to capitalise in the circle, due to the continuous pressure from Lightbody and Perry.

At half time Mount Burr was up 30-18.

The third quarter began with steady passages of play from the Mozzies, starting the quarter strong.

Laura Schultz and Ella Easterby’s feeds were unmatched, making it hard for Kongorong’s defence to regain possession.

Abbey Falting stopped the drive onto the circle edge, applying pressure to every pass.

Dean and Thiele made timely interceptions for Mount Burr’s mid-court to maintain control, driving the ball down into offence.

Kongorong WA Zara Von Stanke assisted her goalies with strong drives onto the circle.

However the quarter was mainly dominated by Mount Burr, who jumped away to a 20 goal lead at the last change, 47-27.

The Mozzies came out firing in the final quarter, applying pressure all over the court and forcing many errors.

Madi Haggett and Danika Shepherd stepped up with great movement and combination to finish off with fantastic shooting.

Mount Burr’s mid court created opportunities for their goalies to score.

However, when Kongorong had the chance in their attack, Buckingham and Sealey shot at 100% for the quarter.

But it was not enough to stop the home side, with Mount Burr’s second half of the game setting them up for a strong win, 69-39.

Mount Burr’s Haggett and Thiele were named best players, along with Lightbody and Perry for the Hawks.
