New competition fires to life

After a brief false start, Saturday saw the historic birth of the Millicent and Naracoorte Cricket Association and the players rose to the occasion.

Four competitive games were played around the region and the headline act was performed by Rendelsham opener Zach Jones.

Jones will forever be known as the first man to score a ton in the competition thanks to his inspiration effort to power his team to a convincing 116-run win.

The opener negotiated the first ball and did not leave the crease until the final ball as he entered the dressing room holding his head high after a 102 dotted in red ink.

Jones’ unbeaten ton was the perfect foil for Rendelsham to rally around and compile 5/201.

The target proved too imposing for Millicent Footballers who were skittled for 85 inside 27 overs thanks to Toby Brooks’ 3/5 in nine deliveries.

Another top order performer pushed Beachport/Furner over the line against Lucindale.

Lucindale won the toss and batted and went on to post a solid 6/171.

But the target was hosed down in the final over thanks to an unbeaten 96 from Tye McManus.

Runs came at a premium at the Mick and Jean Walker Oval where Mount Burr’s bowlers conjured up a tight win over Millicent.

In tricky conditions the hosts scratched their way to 7/101 from 40 overs with only Mark Wright and Kallan Bevan breaking double figures.

Despite the prospect of defending a relatively low total, the Mount Burr bowlers were at their best and got the job done with 15 runs in the bank.

Although Millicent captain Mitchell Nitschke made life difficult, Nathan Muhovics put on a clinic collecting 5/13 from eight overs to bowl Mount Burr to glory.

Contrastingly the runs were flowing at Wortley Oval in the battle between Townies and Warriors.

A gritty half century from Jason McClure pushed Warriors to 8/159 from its 40 overs.

But it was not enough after Bredon Smart and Justin Redding guided the Townies home with four wickets and 49 balls to spare.
