Aslice of Mount Gambier’s history will throw its doors open to the public this month.
The Old Courthouse is part of The National Trust in SA, with a group of committed locals continuing to promote and preserve the heritage of Mount Gambier and the South East.
The Old Courthouse, on Bay Road, is a proud reminder of Mount Gambier’s legal and social history.
This year the building is marking 157 years since the first murder trial was held, after it was completed and opened in 1865.
Records show that in September 1868 a speeding infringement was recorded, with a horse was being ridden too fast down Commercial Street. The unfortunate plaintiff was the Inspector of Police.
The building has many items on display, including posters of stories of old cases and other historic items, while the holding cells and the furniture are in original condition.
During the open day on September 22 there will be a sausage sizzle, while the courthouse will be open for viewing with members of the National Trust present to answer questions or show people through from 10am to 2pm.
Local volunteers will also be holding an extra activity on October 13, with a garage sale and fundraiser on Sunday October at the Old Courthouse to help finance ongoing restorations and renovations.
There will be plants, books, bric-a-brac and many other items available.
Members of the community who wish to donate items for sale can contact 0403 815 393.
The garage sale will be a cash only event.
