Pairs persist for glory

Proceedings shifted up the gears at Port MacDonnell Bowls Club last week with two big competitions and a round of Mid Week Pennants to be decided.

In very warm conditions the seaside club held it’s Men’s and Ladies pairs competitions on Saturday.

The Ladies Pairs was sponsored by Doddridge/Vanderley which saw six pairs nominate for the chance to bowl to victory.

Heather Richards and Carol Schmidt started strong defeating Elaine Pruis and Lyn Vanderley.

The victorious pair continued their winning momentum by overcoming Jennie Tilley and Judith Grosvenor to reach the final.

Meanwhile, Robyn Burley and Nell Lucas were also building up a head of steam beating Jan Dowdell and Sharon Perryman.

However, their momentum was cut short the second round by Marilyn Sutton and Lorraine Mackereth, who soared into the decider.

In the final the Sutton-Mackereth pair got the jump scoring one on the first end.

But then Richards/Schmidt picked up three to mount a fightback.

However, their hat-trick was not enough with Sutton and Mackereth holding a slender 4-3 lead.

Looking to make their move, Richards and Schmidt then picked up an eight and a three to kill the game off as a contest and finally winning 21-11.

It was a classy effort which gave the pair back-to-back titles at the bay.

The Men’s Pairs was sponsored by Eckermann Conveyancers and nine pairs nominated for the honour.

Tim Wrightson and Keith Dowdell set the early running out bowling Terry Seiler and Michael Glynn.

They then went on to knockoff Bill McGregor and Rod Sutton on their way to the final.

Danny Gaut and Chris Negline were also in strong form defeating Robert Hutchesson and Des Horrigan before rolling with the form to outclass Bill and Chris Richards to qualify for the

decider.

When the big game began, Wrightson and Dowdell were switched on scoring a four on the first end before Gaut and Negline found a brief answer.

However, Wrightson and Dowdell blew game apart before too long scoring 15 shots to nil.

After their demolition run the game was all but over and Wrightson and Dowdell ran out 23-9 winners.

Tuesday social bowlers were playing for the Geoff Ward Memorial and the winners for the day were Kel Butler and Graham Hutchesson

The popular Mid Week Pennants competition was back to resume cross-club rivalries.

Port MacDonnell Blue met Millicent Red in what proved to be a competitive contest.

Joe Pruis, Lance Fisher, Jennie Tilley and Terry Seiler gave it everything, but could only manage a 19-all draw.

The result put the pressure on Michael Glynn, Elaine Pruis, Lorriane Mackerth and Danny Gaut and they struggled to deliver.

Their 30-21 loss meant Millicent Red prevailed by the same nine-shot margin.

It was a much happier story for Port MacDonnell Red which hosted Naracoorte for an enjoyable afternoon of bowls.

Barrie Schmidt, Keith Dowdell, Heather Richards and Bill Richards were in fine form, beating their opponents 36-16, while the likes of Des Horrigan, Jan Dowdell, Carol Schmidt and Robert Hutchesson defended home turf by seven shots.

The final result saw Port MacDonnell take home a 57 shots to 30 victory to resume the season in style.
