Paralympian scores new medal

Millicent-born Paralympic gold medallist Jed Altschwager has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his outstanding efforts in last year’s Olympic Games.

He successfully teamed up with rowing partner Nikki Ayers and this led them to the top of the podium in Paris, France in August.

Ms Ayers also received the OAM on Australia Day.

The two rowers received a “rock star welcome” when they attended a reception in their honour at the Beachport Hotel in November.

Mr Altschwager was born at Millicent and District Hospital and has many kin across the South East region owing to his family ties with the Altschwager, Reilly, Prouse and Mitchell clans.

His middle name is Norman and a clear reference to his late grandfather Norman Mitchell who founded Empak Homes.

Following an industrial accident which led to the amputation of a lower leg, Mr Altschwager took up rowing as part of his rehabilitation.
