Pavement pounded for charity

Despite being on her feet in her daily job, Millicent hospitality worker Olivia Hill was quite happy to sign up for a fundraising challenge which involved walking 200km.

Olivia took part in the Cancer Council’s March Charge and achieved her goal of walking the 200km over the 31 days of March.

She did not walk every day but when she did, it was a 14km circuit of the length and breadth of the Millicent township.

Weather and her shifts determined when Olivia would “pound the pavement”.

Each work day, Olivia reports for duty at the Grand Hotel and can be allocated to its bars, dining rooms, bottle department and gaming room.

Her workmates and regular customers were a great source of encouragement as they wished her well.

“Many people have been impacted by cancer and this was my motivation to join the March Charge,” Olivia said

“I have a family member who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer a few months ago.”

Due to the support of family, friends and the general public, her contribution to the Cancer Council was around the four figures mark.

Donations came via the internet as well as collection tins in businesses across Millicent.

The Cancer Council has mapped out the way people can take part in the March Charge.

Individuals and teams can set up a walking or running target depending on fitness level.

They will then receive information and support on how to fundraise and how to reach their goals after signing up to The March Charge.
